Problem of the Week

The problems set in these classes are unusual and not based on mathematical curriculum content: they are designed to encourage creativity as well as rigour in communicating mathematical ideas.

Every student has a problem solving session each week. The content focuses on problems that have a low mathematical entry point, but require deep mathematical thinking. We will teach you mathematical ideas and approaches that enable you to unlock the full power of some mathematical concepts you thought you knew, like prime factorisation, as well as looking at new concepts such as proof by contrapositive and axiomatic systems.

The style of this course mirrors the system that is so successful in prestigious universities, where students are encouraged to work in small groups to discuss their ideas, before forming and testing hypotheses as they move towards rigorous mathematical arguments.

It provides ideal recreational opportunities and is perfect for developing the skills and knowledge that form part of the hidden syllabus behind many mathematical challenges and University entrance exams.
