Ad-Hoc Exams Invigilator

Cambridge Maths School is seeking reliable, professional and confident Exam Invigilators to join our team for the 2025–2026 exam series. Invigilating exams is a rewarding experience, and it makes a significant contribution to our students’ success. We are looking for reliable and confident adults with a passion for helping young people. Full training will be provided, so previous experience is not necessary.

This academic year, we will be running internal assessments for Year 12 alongside formal exams for Year 13, scheduled for May–June 2026. Invigilators are employed on a casual contract, with working hours agreed through negotiation across each exam season. Invigilators may work morning sessions, afternoon sessions, or full days depending on availability.

If you currently work as an invigilator for another school and have availability for the A level exam series, we would be very happy to onboard you as a contracted invigilator (subject to a satisfactory reference) for Cambridge Maths School. (All standard safeguarding, DBS, and compliance checks apply.)

 

The role of the exams invigilator

To ensure that examinations are conducted according to the regulations to:

  • enable all candidates to have an equal opportunity to demonstrate their abilities
  • maintain the security of the examination materials before, during and after the examination
  • prevent possible candidate malpractice
  • prevent possible administrative failures

 

General requirements

Experience of invigilation is not required as training in the role and duties of an invigilator will be provided

Invigilators are required to:

  • declare if they have invigilated previously and whether they have any current maladministration/malpractice sanctions applied to them
  • confirm their availability in advance of main examination periods

Invigilators must confirm the confidentiality and security requirements surrounding the invigilation process are known, understood and will be followed at all times.

 

Person specification

An ideal candidate will:

  • be reliable, flexible and readily available during main examination periods
  • have effective communication skills and good interpersonal skills
  • work well as part of a team
  • be a confident and reassuring presence to candidates in examination rooms
  • be able to give instructions and manage situations involving different groups of people
  • have basic IT skills (familiar with use of email, mobile phone messaging etc.)
  • seek to achieve competence in the role and a rigorous understanding of the JCQ regulations

 

Main duties

Exam Invigilators ensure examinations are conducted in line with JCQ, awarding body and Cambridge Maths School regulations, maintaining the integrity and security of all assessments.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Following instructions from the Exams Officer and ensuring all exam materials remain confidential and secure.
  • Preparing exam rooms, admitting candidates, checking identities, seating candidates, and distributing materials.
  • Supervising candidates throughout exams, remaining alert, maintaining a calm environment, and addressing queries within regulations.
  • Managing incidents, emergencies or irregularities and completing required records.
  • Collecting and checking scripts, ensuring details match attendance records, and returning all materials securely.

Additional duties may include:

  • Completing mandatory safeguarding and JCQ training.
  • Supporting candidates with approved access arrangements (e.g., reader, scribe, prompter).
  • Supervising timetable clashes and assisting with administrative tasks, including question paper security checks and helping pack and dispatch exam scripts.

 

Recruitment procedure

Our recruitment process is as follows:

  1. Formal application on Trust application form. We do not accept applications by CV.
  2. Formal interview and tour of the school.
  3. If successful, offer of employment subject to enhanced DBS checks, satisfactory references and a Certificate of Good Conduct (if applicable).
  4. Attend face to face training with the Exams Officer to include venue familiarisation, introduction to local policies, local safeguarding training. Complete Exams Office training through the exams office website – this can happen remotely, with certificates sent to school office. A failure to complete and pass the training assessments will mean that you will be unable to take up the role.

 

Please note that if exams are cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances we will pay invigilators only for those hours actually worked, not those booked. We will also pay all successful candidates for half a day to complete the required training.
